The look and feel of Atlanta United’s inaugural 2017 home kit was a standout design in a cluttered and uninspired MLS jersey market. If Josef Martínez and Miguel Almirón defined the club’s style and swagger from a playing perspective, their home uniform defined it from a fashion perspective. But, as confirmed by Friday night’s 2021 primary kit release at a drive-in event held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta, the bold red and black bands worn from 2017 to 2020 are now gone, replaced by five thin stripes on an all black shirt.
After the jersey leaked earlier this month, the stark deviation in design was met with more dissonance than excitement from Atlanta United fans and MLS observers. The complete look for the 2021 season will feature black shorts and black socks with red trim.
