Message From Our Technical Director

Hi VFC players and parents,

What an extraordinary few months we have lived through. I hope you and your families have stayed safe and well during these troubled times and that the coronavirus has not caused too many long-term changes in your lives.

It’s a real pleasure to welcome you to VFC for another season. I and all the coaches are really looking forward to seeing you all back on the field playing the sport you love. It’s been too long!

That being said, COVID-19 is still very much with us, so safety is our No. 1 priority for the months ahead. Please pay close attention to all the guidelines given to you via email by Rebecca Anton, our fantastic Operations Manager, and your coaches and managers. Many of you will know some from attending camps in the summer, but we must all work together to stay healthy, especially as flu season approaches, too.

Part of that is how you look after yourselves on and off the field. Make sure you stay hydrated, not just at the soccer field, and eat well before training (and games, as and when they come back).

I know I say this every season, but this year more than ever you will all be less fit than normal You’ve all gone through the longest compulsory period without soccer in your lifetimes, so take the stretching in warm-ups and cooldowns seriously to look after those aching muscles and come back stronger.

Pre-season this year will be a blend of skill and technique-based work alongside fitness activities. Just remember that the fitter you are, the more you enjoy playing. Our pre-season program is at the heart of our work hard, play hard culture, about players bonding tightly together and bringing that club culture into our Vancouver community.

When the “normal” season starts in September, we will have our regular practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Andy Livingstone. Until games restart, we will use those Saturday fields at Andy Livingstone and Empire for more practice and skill development.

Our club is still one of the best in the Lower Mainland. It’s one of the reasons so many of you come back season after season, and why we continue to attract high-quality U13 players in an increasingly crowded market. We continue to work hard behind the scenes to keep us at the top.

It’s going to be a season like no other. Together, we can still make it a special soccer experience.

As Dr. Bonnie Henry says: be kind, be calm and be safe.
